🌋Tribute to the miners of Kawah Ijen. ⏲️ The miners start their journey around midnight, riding motorbikes to the volcano.
🥾 They then hike 2,800 meters to the top before descending into the crater, where they break apart solid sulfur into small boulders.
😱 They carry the sulfur in wicker baskets balanced on poles across their shoulders. The hardest part is the return trip, as they haul loads of 60 to 80 kg on their backs while breathing in thick, toxic fumes. From toxic gas exposure to the danger of falling rocks, the sulfur dioxide gas can cause respiratory problems, skin problems and cancer.
💲They earn about 1,000 rupiah (IDR) per kilogram, which means around $5 for a 60-kilogram trip, totaling about $10 for two trips in an 8-hour workday (this is one of the highest-paid professions in the area). ℹ️ The miners of Ijen hope to be the last generation to work this way. They are people that are happy and proud of their work but they want to earn enough money to send their children to school and provide them with better opportunities than sulfur mining. ❤️ My guide used to be a minor and was happy to make me connect with his former colleagues.
