Getting to Tumpak Sewu

🚗 By car: If you’re traveling from Surabaya, East Java’s capital, it will take approximately 5-6 hours by car. Hiring a private car or joining a guided tour are the most convenient options. From Malang, it takes around 2hours. 

🚌 By local transport: From Lumajang, you can hire a motorbike or take a local minibus (angkot) to the village of Sidomulyo, the starting point of the trek to Tumpak Sewu. It takes about 1 hour. From Malang, you can get there by renting a motorbike or hiring a private driver.

When to Visit ☀️

The best time to visit Tumpak Sewu is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and the trails are safer and more accessible. The rainy season can make the paths slippery and dangerous, but the waterfall is at its most powerful and impressive.

Opening hours: 7 AM to 5 PM.

Prices 💰

The entrance fee to the Tumpak Sewu panoramic viewpoint is 20,000 IDR (1,30 USD) per person. An additional 10,000 IDR (0,65 USD) to see the waterfall from the bottom. The parking fee is 5,000 IDR (0,35 USD) for motorbikes and 10,000 IDR (0,65 USD) for cars.

Trail Overview

The trek to Tumpak Sewu is moderately challenging and takes about 1-2 hours each way. The trail includes steep descents, river crossings, and slippery paths. Proper footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are essential.

But from the parking lot, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the impressive viewpoint where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the waterfall.

Our opinion, this tour is not suitable for young children, the elderly, or individuals with knee issues.

What to Expect

The Descent

The trek starts with a descent through lush forest. Wooden ladders and ropes are provided at the steepest sections. Take your time and be cautious, as some parts can be slippery.

River Crossing

You will need to cross a river before reaching the base of the waterfall. During the dry season, the water level is manageable, but be prepared to get your feet wet.

The Base

As you approach the base of Tumpak Sewu, the thunderous sound of cascading water grows louder. The sight of the waterfall from the bottom is truly spectacular. Mist from the falls creates a refreshing atmosphere, perfect for cooling off after the trek.

Goa Tetes Cave

Just a short trek from Tumpak Sewu, Goa Tetes is a fascinating cave with beautiful rock formations and smaller waterfalls inside. It’s worth a visit for sure! After enjoying the stunning view of Tumpak Sewu from the base, head back towards the entrance of the waterfall area. There are signs or guides indicating the direction to the cave. It takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace and the trail conditions. Once you reach Goa Tetes, you can explore the cave and its mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites, along with the waterfalls inside the cave.

The entrance fee to Goa Tetes Waterfall is 10,000 IDR (0,65 USD). 

Kapas Biru Waterfall

Another stunning waterfall nearby, Kapas Biru offers a more tranquil setting and is less visited by tourists. The trek to Kapas Biru is also challenging but rewarding. You will have to take your car and drive 10 minutes to reach the parking.
