Java, Indonesia, is a land of breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and historical marvels. If you’re planning a trip to this enchanting island, here’s the itinerary that we did. It will take you through some of Java’s most iconic destinations: Ijen Crater, Jodipan (Rainbow Village), Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, Mount Bromo, and the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan.

Practical infos

☀️ Dry Season: May to October is the best time to visit, with less rain and more favorable weather for outdoor activities.

🚗 Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Ride-sharing apps like Grab and Gojek are the most popular. About the trains, Java has an extensive and reliable train network. Book tickets in advance, especially for long-distance travel.

💰 Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. Credit Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops in urban areas. Cash is necessary for rural areas and small businesses. Tipping are not obligatory but appreciated, especially in restaurants and for good service.

📝 Visas: Most nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for 30 days, which can be extended for another 30 days. Check the latest requirements before traveling. For the vaccinations, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are commonly advised. Water, avoid drinking tap water. Stick to bottled or filtered water. 

Before we begin, note that this itinerary can be done in either direction. We opted for this route to avoid the crowds, and we are definitely pleased with our choice.

Day 1: Arrival in Banyuwangi
  • Banyuwangi International Airport (BWX) is the closest airport to the Ijen Crater.
  • Check into your hotel and rest after your journey.
  • We chose the Ketapang Indah Hotel, and we highly recommend it if you’re looking to relax by the pool and enjoy some comfort before your expedition.
Day 2: Ijen Crater
  • Depart around midnight for the hike to Ijen Crater.
  • Witness the magical blue flames and the stunning sunrise over the sulfuric lake.
  • Explore the crater
  • Travel from Banyuwangi to Malang.
Day 3: Jodipan (Rainbow Village)
  • Visit Jodipan, the vibrant Rainbow Village in Malang.
  • Wander through the colorful alleys, taking photos of the striking street art and murals.
  • Enjoy a leisurely lunch in Malang.
  • In the afternoon, visit other local attractions such as Malang City Square or the Malang Night Market.

     

    Day 4: Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
    • Depart early for Tumpak Sewu Waterfall (approximately 2-3 hours drive from Malang).
    • Hike down to the waterfall and take in the breathtaking views.
    • Spend the day exploring the area and enjoying the natural beauty.
    • Travel to Mount Bromo (approximately 3-4 hours by car)
Day 7 & 8: Mount Bromo Sunrise
  • Early morning departure to Mount Bromo for sunrise.
  • Take a jeep tour to the viewpoint and witness the spectacular sunrise over the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park.
  • Explore the Bromo crater and the surrounding area.
  • Return to your accommodation for breakfast.
  • Spend the rest of the day at leisure, exploring the local area or resting.

We chose to spend two days here to explore the area by motorbike, but one day is also sufficient to get a great impression of this beautiful place.

Day 9: Bromo to Yogyakarta
  • Travel from Bromo to Yogyakarta (approximately 8-9 hours).
  • Check into your hotel in Yogyakarta.
  • Relax and enjoy a local dinner in the city.
Day 10: Temples of Borobudur and Prambanan
  • Early morning visit to Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist temple in the world.
  • Explore the intricate carvings and stunning architecture.
  • In the afternoon, visit Prambanan Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia.
  • Explore the temple grounds and learn about the history and significance of the site.
  • Return to Yogyakarta for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
